On 9 October 2012, a
15-year-old Pakistani school girl, MalalaYousafzai was shot by Taliban gunmen
who were against girl’s education. In December 2012, a college student was
sexually assaulted in the Indian capital leading to a national and
international outrage. Such heinous crimes in the recent years have echoed in
the consciousness of international groups, NGOs, human activists and common
citizens. While laws of every country are strikingly different, the bottom line
is similar for all countries– deliver justice upholding the highest principles
as enshrined in the constitution. As globalization penetrates countries all
across the globe and the world is becoming a global village, there has been a
tremendous overlapping of laws. Scholars, thinkers and legal luminaries from
every country are coming forward to discuss the scope and extent of laws. In
this context, the role of law schools has become more important.
In India, the largest
democracy in world, the founding principles of justice and equality for
everyone in the eyes of law are seen as the cornerstone of its constitution. Law
schools play a major role in establishing the facts and have been at the
forefront of giving highest quality law education in the country. As global
policies and global integration is becoming a reality for India, we need laws
schools with international education. A law
school with international exposure, in India offers students a pragmatic
approach to derive insights and take cues from what happening globally.
Needless to say, several laws enshrined in our constitution have been taken
from England’s constitution. Viewing and understanding laws from international
perspective helps in identifying the loopholes in a nation’s law system and it
also gives the impetus to adopt better laws. In this age of technology and
social media, when the world is just a click away, a law school with international exposure, in India will train leaders
of the tomorrow. India needs competent and excellent lawyers to ensure justice
prevails in our society and we as a nation are able to prove that we are indeed
the world’s biggest democracy.
