FDI in India? Its Pros and Cons

The Foreign Direct Investment abbreviated as (FDI) can be defined in a single sentence as “investment made by a foreign company to a country. The investment is practiced either by taking proprietorship of a company in the target country or by making operation's expansion of an existing business in that country. The investment is made aiming at advantageous experience – cheaper wages, special investment privileges, for example tax exemptions, offered by the country. 

Generally, a country taking FDI implementation decision at the time of its domestic capital seems deficient for the economic growth.  The unending debate of online privacy seems to have taken an ugly turn in the past couple of weeks. The shocking expose of a surveillance program–PRISM by USA's premier security agency, the National Security Agency (NSA) has fueled the debate on a state's power to monitor, track and record online activities of its citizens. The so-called Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression, regarded with high honor by constitution of most democratic countries seems questionable now. As Edward Snowden, a former CIA employee who exposed NSA, is on a run, seeking asylum in some countries, the question about US government's PRISM program in Indian context becomes all the more important. In India although there have been no major protests against online privacy breach, defenders of online privacy are crying foul against India's Centralized Monitoring System (CMS) which they believe is somewhat, if not completely similar to USA's PRISM program.

So is the “Indian Prism” equally dangerous and deeply violates our fundamental rights? Well, may be yes. Or may be not. Activists fighting for online privacy claim that through the CMS program, the Indian government has the power and authority to tap phone calls, mobile and Internet traffic too. The fact is that CMS is shrouded in mystery and very little details about it are available in the public domain making it more suspicious. The first time CMS came into highlight was after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. In the wake of the gruesome incident, CMS was touted to be a one stop solution for gathering, sharing and distributing data across intelligence officials and agencies spread throughout India. After that, there has been no information, public debates, scholarly discussions to ensure that the public is aware about CMS. This raises some obvious questions regarding individual privacy rights in a democratic country like ours. Many acclaimed lawyers working for privacy rights have labeled such steps of our government as “gross violations of individual liberty”. In India, cricket has been followed as a religion over the last two to three decades. We are a country of more than 1.2 billion people cheering for the Indian Cricket Team and thus we can sense the euphoria and madness the game of cricket generates in India.

In 2008, when Lalit K. Modi launched the first edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) and invited the top notch business tycoons and film stars in India to invest money into it, some critics or we can say cricket enthusiasts had a serious question in their minds, Is the money and glamour going to dampen the true spirit of cricket? Is materialism going to affect the integrity of the players? The recent spot fixing scandal in this year's IPL has thrown the spotlight onto the ugly truth behind all the extravaganza. The incident has indeed proved that the desire to earn quick money and materialism has affected the integrity and loyalty of the players. Spot fixing has been coming on from ages right from the period of Hansie Cronje to Mohammand Azharuddin to Ajay Jadeja. This case was refereed to the Supreme court to ban IPL, but even the supreme court denied to ban the league and said in it's statement that it was BCCI's duty to frame tougher laws and take strict actions against such acts of disgrace to the game.

Though debates are still on, and so are the cases against the players, but I feel that simply banning the IPL is not a sensible solution to this as that would be the loss of cricket to materialism. Instead the cricketing authorities should deal with them strictly and frame tougher laws to stop betting, spot fixing and other such acts that taint the gentleman's game.

In Search of a Better India

It was in the wake of a devastating incident that took place last year on the night of 17th December which jolted the conciousness of the nation. A rattling case of sexuat assualt was reported and this time the victim was a 23-year-old paramedical student who was brutally raped by six men in a moving bus.

A furor of outrage broke nationwide as this incident exposed the distressed policing and law order situation in the country. When there was still ambiguity over her health and the chances were grim. The abhorrence of this incident shook the nation and made People take the street in many parts of the country demanding quick justice for her and stringent laws dealing with rape cases.

 This horrific incident once again ruptured the claims of Delhi police and it scathed the notion of safety that prevails in our civil society. What came as another major blow is the survey that said this case has dented the confidence of working women not just in the areas of National Capital Region (NCR) and Delhi but also in other major cities. The officials in the companies are insisting female to leave offices early on dot, immediately after duty hours following this atmosphere of insecurity.

It started then, when the people demanded a better and stiff law on such charges and no mercy for the guilty. A Justice Verma Committee was set up which completed its report within a time frame of one month adhering to the fact that these crimes cannot be dealt with ease and laid back attitude. The report highlighted few very basic and many (till now) untouched issues involving women rights.

Today, after 3 months of open and closed debates within the Lok Sabha, where a bill was tabled amidst different political will was passed which provides for natural life term or even death for those who commit crimes like rape and stringent punishment for various offences like stalking, voyeurism and acid attacks. According to the centre, this Bill was being brought to plug loopholes in the law and will surely deter heinous crimes which earlier went unaccounted.
